Exact Match Domain (EMD)

A domain that exactly matches a search query — once gamed for SEO, now of limited standalone value.

An exact match domain (EMD) is a domain that exactly matches a search query — for example, "bestcarpetcleaning.com" for the keyword "best carpet cleaning." EMDs were heavily gamed for SEO in the early 2010s. Google's 2012 EMD update reduced the ranking boost for low-quality exact-match domains. High-quality EMDs with good content still benefit from natural keyword alignment, but EMDs alone no longer guarantee SEO advantage.
