Root Zone
The top of the DNS hierarchy listing all TLDs and their nameservers — managed by ICANN/IANA.
The DNS root zone is the top of the DNS hierarchy, containing the authoritative list of all TLDs and their nameservers. It is managed by IANA (a function of ICANN) and hosted on 13 root server clusters distributed globally. When a DNS resolver cannot find a cached answer, it queries a root server to begin the resolution process. The root zone file lists every TLD and their associated nameservers.
