Domain Tasting

An old practice of registering domains for free using the 5-day grace period refund policy — eliminated by ICANN in 2009.

Domain tasting was a practice where registrars exploited ICANN's five-day Add Grace Period (AGP) to register domains, collect parking revenue, and then delete them for a full refund — effectively using domains for free. The practice generated millions of fraudulent registrations, inflating domain statistics and preventing legitimate registrations. ICANN largely eliminated domain tasting in 2009 by charging a fee for deletions that exceed 10% of registrations.
