Registry

The authoritative organization that maintains the master database for a specific TLD.

A domain registry is the authoritative organization that maintains the central database of all domain names registered under a specific TLD. For example, Verisign operates the registry for .com and .net, while PIR manages .org. Registrars purchase wholesale registrations from the registry, then sell them retail to end users. Registries set wholesale pricing and policies.
